The community of Aklavik had decided to light their cancles at the church rather than individually. There was some concern about using paper bags with the votive lights as they had no sand, so they were going to line the candles along the pathway leading to the church.
In their mind, the candles outside would be like the landing lights at an airport (all kinds of symbolism there, with the church as the airport building!)
The recessional hymn was the special collection hymn. At the end of it they did the prayer litany and then Stuart, their lay leader, was to dismiss them. they were to take their candles and go outside and place them on the pathway. Two people had lit candles from the altar and were standing waiting to light everyone's candles as they went out. Unfortunately, as soon as they opened the doors and went out, the wind was so fierce that it blew the candles out! So, they decided to line up the candles in the aisle of the church, as you can see in the photo.
They didn't do quite what they wanted but their spirits were very willing!
